Clyde to win William Hill Scottish League Two

-

Stranraer won the relegation play-off last season, meaning that Edinburgh City and Stirling Albion are the two new additions to William Hill Scottish League Two after Stenhousemuir won the title and Dumbarton went up via the play-offs.

Edinburgh endured a shocking campaign last term, trailing home bottom of the third tier with just eight points to their name.

If their League Cup results are anything to go by, their struggles could be set to continue and they look more likely to suffer another relegation than to bounce back at the first time of asking.

Stirling may also find the downward spiral hard to arrest and failed to impress in scoring just once in four League Cup outings.

Big-spending Clyde should be able to top the charts

Of the eight teams remaining at this level from last season, Clyde have made the most noticeable changes over the summer.

Seemingly spooked by finishing just two points clear of bottom-placed Stranraer last term, the Bully Wee have gone on a spending spree.

Manager Ian McCall, himself a big name at this level, has added six men who played at least 20 times in League One last season to his team as well as Marley Redfern and Tommy Robson from the Championship.

Jordan Allen scored eight goals and added two assists in 16 league games for Clyde last term and their star striker returns for the new campaign.

Put simply, this squad would not look out of place in League One and challenging for the title will be the minimum expectation.

Their early results have been strong, beating Edinburgh 5-0 in the League Cup before getting the better of Championship title contenders Partick in a 3-2 road win.

Teams can turn themselves inside out with investment at this level and Clyde certainly look like contenders to achieve that.

Ritchie's departure is a blow to Peterhead's hopes

Peterhead finished second last season before a 7-2 aggregate loss to The Spartans in the play-off semi-final.

They lost key man Hamish Ritchie to the same opponents over the summer and while they have made some interesting additions, it may not be enough to push them over the line.

East Fife made an eye-catching managerial appointment in Dick Campbell, the experienced former Arbroath boss.

His arrival should have them aiming higher than last season's fifth-placed finish and they look contenders for promotion, especially if Campbell can utilise the loan market.

The Spartans fell just short against Dumbarton in the play-offs last term and will look to build on that promising debut League Two season.

They are a team on the up and if Blair Henderson can replicate his 18-goal campaign from 2023-24, they could be a force to be reckoned with.

However, despite the credentials of their rivals, Clyde have the squad, the manager and the backing to secure the League Two title this season.

The Bully Wee have the finances to push on if they are embroiled in a tight title race and at this level, that tends to be the difference between making it and falling short.
